A black Ilkal saree in viscose cotton, matte and absolute through the body, until the pallu breaks into silk Gomi Teni in fuchsia pink and grey — colour arriving exactly where the dark is deepest.

The body remains plain, allowing black to hold the length of the saree uninterrupted. A Chikki Paras border is the only other line before the pallu opens into its brighter fuchsia-and-grey geometry.

Black is described here as a rarer presence in the Ilkal palette, giving this saree a distinctly urban, after-hours character while retaining the traditional structure of the craft.

Woven on a traditional pit loom in Ilkal, Karnataka, the saree belongs to an Ilkal tradition known for the relationship between body, border and pallu. A defining technique of the craft is Tope Teni, the traditional method of interlocking the body and pallu to create the characteristic seamless join. The broader Ilkal design vocabulary includes Gomi, Chikki Paras and Gaadi borders, along with checks, stripes and geometric motifs.

Here, that vocabulary is expressed through a plain black body, Chikki Paras edge and a vivid fuchsia-pink-and-grey silk Gomi Teni pallu.
