A Jamdani saree in black cotton, with pale abstract Jamdani motifs floating across the dark ground and a clean red border bringing a sharp line of contrast along the edge.
The motif language continues into the pallu rather than giving way to a separate decorative treatment, allowing the handwoven pattern to carry from body to close.
Woven on a traditional pit loom in Nadia (Badtehatta / Senpur), West Bengal, the saree belongs to Bengal’s Jamdani tradition, where motifs are created through an exacting extra-weft technique. Each motif is individually woven by hand into the fabric, building pattern directly into the cotton ground rather than applying it to the surface.
The broader Jamdani vocabulary includes floral, geometric and paisley forms, with traditional patterns such as Butidar, Tersa and Konia. Here, the product-specific design is expressed through abstract Jamdani motifs against black, with red defining the border and the motifs continuing through the pallu.
