An Ilkal saree woven in viscose cotton, with a plain sage green body that deepens into bottle green through the border and pallu details.

A Chikki Paras border holds the edge, while the pallu is woven in silk Gomi Teni in green and blue, extending the saree’s tonal progression rather than introducing a sharp contrast.

Woven on a traditional pit loom in Ilkal, Karnataka, the saree belongs to an Ilkal tradition known for the distinctive relationship between body, border and pallu. A defining technique of the craft is Tope Teni, the traditional method of interlocking the body and pallu to create the characteristic seamless join. The broader Ilkal design vocabulary includes Gomi, Chikki Paras and Gaadi borders, along with checks, stripes and geometric motifs.

Here, that vocabulary is expressed quietly through a plain sage-green body, bottle-green accents, a Chikki Paras edge and a green-and-blue silk Gomi Teni pallu.
