Bisilu Nerala

Bisilu Nerala — sunshine and shade.

An Ilkal silk saree woven in green Dhoop Chav, a shot effect in which red appears through the green as the drape moves. The body itself remains plain, allowing the shifting colour of the silk to become the principal visual detail.

A Chikki Paras border defines the edge, while the pallu closes in red silk Gomi Teni, bringing the hidden red of the body fully into view.

Handwoven on a traditional pit loom in Ilkal, Karnataka, the saree belongs to a weaving tradition known for the strong contrast between body, border and pallu. A defining Ilkal technique is Tope Teni, the traditional method of interlocking the body and pallu to create the characteristic seamless join. The broader Ilkal design vocabulary also includes borders such as Gomi, Chikki Paras and Gaadi, along with checks, stripes and geometric motifs.

Here, that tradition is expressed through a restrained plain body, changing shot colour, a Chikki Paras edge and a contrasting red Gomi Teni pallu.

A silk running blouse piece completes the saree — an evening silk that rewards every turn of the shoulder.
